Pierce-Bounds Cemetery

aka Tolbert Cemetery
Submitted by Randy Galloway

This cemetery is located about 3 miles north of Mount Pleasant on Gibson Road between Damascus and Moscow. It has gone by at least a couple of names, but the sign put on it says "Pierce- Bounds Cemetery" . It is also known locally as the Tolbert Cemetery. However, it contains no tombstones of Pierces or Boundses, although a number of graves are marked by rocks. It is historically important as the final resting place of members of the Tolbert family, which local legend states were lynched nearby in 1892 after one of the boys in the family allegedly acosted a young lady of the community in her bedroom. I am not sure how true any of that is, but someone has placed new tombstones on two graves identifying them as Tolberts and listing the death dates as 1892. These tombstones replaced the rocks that marked the graves until the last few years.
