Lampley, Ely

submitted by LeFloris Lyon.

Lampley, Ely [Ely Hamman]

Born February 10, 1845
Died March 30, 1930

Ely Lampley, by all accounts was born a slave in the estimated year of 1845. Ely Lampley's name has been spelled as Eli and Ely and surname as Lampley, Hammon, Hammonds and Hamman. We do not currently have firm evidence of the state of his birth. According to his death certificate and family oral history, his mother was Ammie Hamman. His farther was Alex Hamman. His mother is buried in the Chamberlin Cemetery (West: Black), Located on Kellis Store Road, 1 mile east of Kellis Store, Kemper County. Ammie Hamman's grave inscription indicates "wife of Alex Hamman, Sister Ammie Hamman, born December 25, 1806 and died Apr. 5, 1900. Ely Lampley is also buried in the Chamberlin Cemetery (West: Black), and his inscription reads "Ely Lampley born February 10, 1845 and died on March 30, 1930. Ely was married to Pricilla Johnson and Annie Gully, daughter of WARREN GULLY and CHARITY Gully.

Family oral history indicates that Ely Lampley's family had been the property of a person with the surname Hamman and this family was sold to John C. Lampley. It is not clear as to the time and factual location of this sale, however it appears to have taken place in North Carolina. I would like more information regarding Ely Lampley, his brother Alex Lampley, his father Alex Hamman, his mother Ammie Hamman and all other members of his family. In an effort to obtain additional information, I am posting some documents and photographs that pertain to Ely Lampley. If you have any additional information, please contact me via email at leflorislyon@msn.com and allow me to thank you for any information you may provide.

Eli (or Ely) Lampley – Slave/Servant served the captain’s mess, including Capt. Love, 1st Lt. (acting captain) H.J. Gully, and 1st Sergeant (later captain of cavalry) Benjamin Lampley. He served the whole war, [1861-1865] except for the Carolinas Campaign, [Ely traveled from Vicksburg to Kemper county just prior to the surrender] when he was sick at home; Eli Lampley’s [Eli submitted two applications for his Civil War pension on form No. 3-SERVANT], one application was witnessed by none other than company 2nd Lt. Robert Adcock, who would certainly have been familiar with Eli’s service to the first officer’s of the company [Note: Eli Lampley was almost certainly a slave of wealthy John C. Lampley of Kemper County, who was the father of Benjamin Lampley and father-in-law of H.J. Gully.] (Eli was about age 18 when he went to war)
