   Military Service: 26 APR 1862 C. S. A. -Company I, 40th Regiment,
Mississippi Volunteers
   Note:
          S. A. J. Branning joined the military service for the
Confederate  States Of America Company I, 40th Regiment, Mississippi
Volunteers,  in Kemper Co., Mississippi, on April 26, 1892 for a period
of three years. Samuel was mustered as a Privet in W. B. Colbert's
regiment on the 14th May, 1862 with a salary of $25 per month. His
confederate files states he served from May 14, 1862 until his last
documented company muster roll in August, 1864. Samuel A. J.  Branning
fought in the Battle of Vicksburg. He was present when the  city fell on
July 4th, 1863. He was subsequently released as a  prisoner of war on
July 7, 1863 on condition that he would not bare arms against the United
States. On record is a document he signed  upon his release which is
written in it's entirety below.

VICKSBURG, MISSISSIPPI, JULY 7TH, 1863.

          TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN, KNOW YE THAT

I S. A. J. Branning a Private of Co. ?, 60 Reg't Miss Vols. C.
S. A. being a Prisoner of War, in the hands of the United States Forces,
in virtue of the capitulation of the City of Vicksburg and its garrison,
by Lieut.  Gen. John C. Pemberton, C. S. A., Commanding on the 4th day
of  July, 1863, do in pursuance of the terms of said capitulation, give
this my solemn parole under oath.
          That I will not take up arms again against the United States,
nor  serve in any military police, or constabulary force in any Fort,
Garrison or field work, held by the Confederate Sates of America,
against the United States of America nor as gard of prisons, deposts  or
stoves, nor discharge any duties usually performed by Officer or
soldiers, against the United States of America, until duly exchanged  by
the proper authorities.

          Sworn to and subscribed before me at Vicksburg, Miss, the 7th
day of July 1863.
