Donated to the site by: Beverly M. Daly

Letter written during the Civil War by John Jefferson Houston, from Camp to his wife Martha Jane (Lovelady) Houston. He survived the war, and raised a large family in Kemper Co.

"An Acrostic"
Just could I be permitted to return
Oh! to one, overwhelm my heart doth yearn,
Hard and dreary is the soldier's life,
Never with honor, can he quit the strife.

How can I live without thee,
Oh! it is very hard to me
Until in God I put my trust
Surely I know that he is just.
Trusting in matchless care
Over you is your husband ('s) prayer
Never I hope you will not forsake

you will pleas hand
this to Jane for me
it is my __________
name wrote in
poetry. J. J. Houston
